In August 2009, compelled by the financial situations of women in a local slum community in Bangkok, Thailand, Brittany Fox and Panida Ponkampin wanted to start a business  focused on the empowerment of women who are often faced with problems stemming from poverty, lack of education and injustice.   Additionally, Brittany and Panida felt the need to make the products fair trade and eco-friendly.

After three weeks, in September 2009, Thai Song Fair Trade was started in a small community in Bangkok, and offered dignified employment and the opportunity for women to make unique and fashionable bags out of recycled plastic bags.  Since then, others have caught onto the heart of Thai Song, and today the business also employs young women in the local area to make earrings out of recycled plastic and aluminum cans.

Thai Song looks forward to continuing to grow as more people catch on to the heart of Thai Song and purchase these unique products.

The Meaning Behind ‘Thai Song’
‘Thai Song’ means “To Emit Freedom.”  The name originated by slightly changing the Thai spelling of the name of the slum that the majority of our women live in.

  • [Thai-ไท] – n- Freedom
  • [Song-ส่อง] – v- shine ; illuminate ; shed ; emit
